Weird weather phenomenon Snow-Hail "Graupel"

On a ~40 deg F day in Northern VA, a sudden storm of soft snowy-hail poured down on our yard. The pellets are between the size of a pea and a blueberry and are not icy-hard, but more like packed snow…. In fact, I found the word “graupel” might be the right word for it. I preferred to call it “snail” for snow-hail. But I’ve never seen anything like it before!!
