Bomani Jones joins Howard Bryant and Kate Fagan on this week’s Meadowlarkers. After the news of the A’s setting up to leave Oakland and the potential sale of the Commanders, the crew discusses what responsibility ownership groups have to the city they reside in. They also dive into the saturation in men’s professional sports vs. the ever-expansive space for women’s sports.

I'm a simple man. I see Bo, I thumbs up!
80 is here!!!
Ask the Seattle Sonics fanbase about the OK City Bombers [yeah, that's what we call them 'round here. Deal with it]
After Mariners did a hustle on the county council, the Seahawks had to do some semi-criminal 'midnight legislating' to get their funding package. So when the NBA and Boss Stern came around looking for the same kind of deal, they were told to kick rocks. So the NBA allowed Bennett, an OK businessman who's stated aim was to get a team to OKC, to buy the team with predictable results.
Respect to Howard for posting up in a bath robe.
I've been counting the episodes with 77 coming up hoping Howard would bring up Ray Borque and he didn't disappoint!!!
Always love when Bomani makes an appear. Hope he can be on more LAF productions. Great show.
Way too many commercials
Love seeing Bomani here. Every time I see him I always think about when Papi kept calling him Bodamis Jones π
#78 Bruce Smith – NFL All-Time Sack Leader* (since they started keeping records of sacks)
As a San Antonio native and fan, who has also lived in Austin for a few years before returning; I think the Spurs playing games in Austin is a great idea. Make it an event, get the celebs that are moving there invested.
RC said it plainly, San Antonio is home for them. Look at the success of the AlamoDome game this year. The Spurs are always super invested in our community and embracing the Latin culture. They are playing games in Mexico City, growing the game there.
SA is the perfect bridge for the Austin community and growing the game in Mexico.
Would I be upset if they moved to Austin 5-10 years from now? Of course. But Iβd still go. Two hours is nothing in Texas drive-time.
I subbed to ESPN+ to follow my local colleges (2) women's teams. The feeling of community and playing for the beauty/competition of the game (not to get rich) and the overt (compared to men's) team spirit is palpable. That is a compelling aspect to me as a spectator. On the other hand, if there were more money involved? if those mid major colleges turned into farm systems for UCONN or S. Carolina? man. what a wash that would be. I wouldn't bother paying to follow it. It's an interesting dilemma. per Kate's point.
I fuckin love the skippy white reference howard keep em coming ππ
One sport you guys are forgetting is soccer, which seems to have a growth pattern due to immigrants migrating here. Here in St. Louis, we built a stadium for soccer and the team has a big following. In my lifetime in St. Louis, we lost the Hawks, The Spirits of St. Louis, Football Cardinals, the Rams, the Steamers, and the Browns before my time.
Great conversation. I enjoyed it completely. How this topic was discussed and not a single mention of what is happening in San Diego in regards to the Chargers leaving, the Padres and their ownership buying all in on winning, and the possibility of it being an expansion city for any sport that isn't the MLB obviously. Seemingly missed example of furthing some of the points. Regardless, the talk was still excellent.
Bomani finally joining the pirate ship?
The way team ownership is, you rely on a couple of people to bring wealth to your city with these sports teams.
22:10 the Orlando/Tampa comp is very apt… not that it'll ever happen, but if the Magic left for Tampa or if the Rays left for Orlando, those teams would be lucky if even 5% of the fans in the city they left behind carried their fandom over to the other town. People in those towns don't see themselves as being from the same "market"; if anything, they see each other as rival cities at this point.
Yβall gotta start bringing up relegation in sports leagues in Europe. Itβs a consequence for losing, something we should push for stateside
In Nashville we were told if the Oilers moved Houston would get the next expansion team. It was one of reasons why the vote for the team passed.
Concerts concerts concerts..while sporting events play part in Nashville dome it is the ability to host huge music events year round bought in non sports support. I am still dubious of some financing but not canceling massive concerts due to lightning or 3 hour plus delays is attractive.
The bad part of Nashville is crazy increase in cost of living but the soul is still there. There is Broadway nashville and the rest of the city. Same when it was music row and rest of Nashville. Beyond sports Nashville big problem is state trying to take power of how the city.
Surprised no one mentioned Gheorghe Muresan # 77 in the NBA…
