Climate Scientist responds to Sabine Hossenfelder on Climate Sensitivity

How hot will our planet actually get? Climate scientists try to answer this question by evaluating the “climate sensitivity”. And if you’ve watched the recent Sabine Hossenfelder, you may be left with the impression that climate change wasn’t much to worry about… but now it is. So I’m here to explain what the evidence is actually showing us, and why the situation is a little more nuanced than Sabine’s commentary may have suggested. And crucially I break down how climate scientists arrive at a number for the crucial “climate sensitivity”, to give us a sense for how much global warming we’re in for.

Unusually large waves hit the coast of California amid powerful storms

Waves more than 20ft high poured over seawalls and the tops of low cliffs along the Pacific coast, flooding nearby streets and leaving many injured. In a video taken on Thursday morning, people are seen fleeing Pierpont beach – just north of Los Angeles – as a rogue wave engulfs the area.

Flooding claims lives in Spain after record rainfall – BBC News

Heavy rain has caused major flooding across Spain with Madrid, Toledo and Cádiz regions especially badly affected.

A number of people have lost their lives after become trapped in flood waters.

Residents in Madrid have been asked to stay at home due to “the exceptional and abnormal” rainfall, the city’s mayor said.

The record amounts of rainfall were due to a slow-moving storm.

The rains have caused mudslides on many roads and train services have been suspended in affected areas.

The extreme rain follows a scorching summer in Spain and much of southern Europe. Climate scientists are warning that extreme weather events are becoming far more common due to global warming.

Huge sinkhole opens up in China after catastrophic flooding

Typhoon Doksuri has swept northwards over China, bringing heavy rainfall to Beijing and the surrounding areas. State media reports at least 21 deaths caused by the floods, as authorities expect floodwaters to take a month to recede in the worst-affected areas. Local residents teamed with the military to evacuate those who had been trapped inside their homes since the rain began.

Footage circulating on social media shows cars being swept away and collapsed roads. The extreme weather comes as China’s foreign ministry denied reports that it had obstructed discussions on tackling climate change at G20 meetings in India a week ago.

Italy battles extreme storms and wildfires over 24-hour period

In the past 24 hours Italy has battled wildfires in the south while violent storms wreaked havoc in the north. Authorities in Sicily closed part of the motorway and temporarily shut Palermo airport after temperatures reached 47C, triggering wildfires across the island.

Hundreds of firefighters from other regions were due to arrive to help douse the flames. In the north, Lombardy faced violent storms.
