Extreme weather throughout July has caused havoc across the planet, with temperatures breaking records in China, the United States and southern Europe, sparking forest fires, water shortages, storms and floods.

Wildfires killed 34 people in Algeria and forced the evacuation of thousands of tourists from the Greek island of Rhodes as an intense summer heatwave scorched large areas of the Mediterranean.

Another blaze caused the temporary closure of Palermo airport on the southern Italian island of Sicily on Tuesday, while an overnight storm tore off roofs and brought down trees in the north of the country, killing two people.

In some parts of eastern Sicily, temperatures rose to 47.6 Celsius on Monday, close to a record European high of 48.8 Celsius recorded on the island two years ago.

It was even hotter in North Africa, with temperatures of 49 Celsius recorded in some cities in Tunisia.

Neighbouring Algeria deployed some 8,000 firefighters to bring its deadly fires under control, authorities said.

In Asia, monsoon rains wreaked havoc across Pakistan on Tuesday (July 25), after parts of the commercial capital Karachi were inundated on the previous night.

Meanwhile, China urged fishing boats to seek shelter as Super Typhoon Doksuri spiralled closer to East Asia, potentially reaching deep into China.

Doksuri is likely to be the most powerful typhoon to land in China so far in the storm season this year.

In Pakistan, 13 people died and seven were injured due to heavy rains and landslides as monsoon season continued to affect parts of the country on Sunday.

In the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, nine people lost their lives over the last 48 hours in rain-related incidents.

Cuba recorded record-high temperatures for July on Sunday, when the scorching hot weather drove thermometers up to 39 degrees Celsius, further worsened by a lack of rain.

Without human-induced climate change, the events this month would have been “extremely rare,” according to a study by World Weather Attribution, a global team of scientists that examines the role played by climate change in extreme weather.

Preliminary estimates show up to 250 mm of rain fell in some areas of Nova Scotia as of 6 a.m., and in the Halifax area, it appears to be the heaviest rainfall event since 1971, a local meteorologist says. The torrential rain has caused severe flooding on several highways throughout the province and power outages affecting 40,000 customers, and prompted the evacuation of residents near the St. Croix River system.
