When the temperature gets down to minus 40, it won't matter if it's Fahrenheit or Centigrade. It's the same temperature. Super-brrr!

I've been in Minnesota when the wind chill was -40. Pretty nasty with -54 being recorded now.
Everyone in CA and TX have always had single pane windows. I've NEVER had a double pane window in my life.
Well, it is winter. I'd be more concerned if it was occurring in July. Those in the US may find it cold but this is how every winter is for me in Canada. There's not a lot of snow or cold leading up to the new year compared to when I was a kid but January and February have always felt like the Arctic.

I don't see how this is historic when we in Illinois have had cold weather like this back in the 90's and 70's. On another note I live in shelbyville Illinois which is south central. It was -18 degrees and -41 wind chill yesterday. Yes dangerous and it's common sense to stay inside and have pets inside. It's stupid to warn others about this because it's common sense and if u don't well it's one less problem in the world as I see it. Oh and our new corrupt fat ass governor has declared a state emergency with all kinds of money he has somehow pulled out of his ass because our state is broke!!!

Wind chill does not affect inanimate objects like it does people. Things will cool more rapidly but their temperature will not drop below the ambient temperature as it will with living beings.

When I was living in a cabin in northern New Hampshire I bought two panels (4×8 feet) of half inch thick foam insulation from a building supply store and cut the pieces to fit the windows and taped them up. You can even do half pieces to make shutters to open to look out. I spent $75 and didnt have to feed the stove all night. Good luck to all up there, I'm now in Flori-duh and we're all prayin for ya.

Sorry MrMBB333 but wind chill factor has no effect on objects like one pain windows, it does only on living beings. So the temp difference between inside and outside of windows is calculated with pure temperatures only…just saying π‘ππ

Oh My God, the sky is falling… We are going into another Ice Age… OTFLMAO… Hahaha.. I live in Eastern Montana, it gets down to Subzero temperatures here EVERY winter. I have worked outside in -50 degree (F) temperatures.. This year the jet stream has moved to the east, which is now bringing that cold Arctic air, down on the midwest, instead of Montana and the Dakota's, Nebraska, Iowa, etc.. IT Is NOT the end of the world, it is a weather phenomena.. Dress warm, and in layer's. If you have short haired pets, keep them inside. Cover your windows on the inside, with plastic film to create an airgap. Keep emergency candles, high protein snacks and thermal blankets

Double pane glass should have a vacuum between the panes. There are 3 modes of heat transfer, conductive, convective, and radiant. The vacuum layer stops conductive and convective heat transfer. Radiant heat transfer can happen in a vacuum. A single pane window is exposed to all 3 types of heat transfer.

Bummer i should have watched this a week ago. That Tuesday night in extreme northern MN (10 miles from Canadian border) we had -66 wind chills!!
