A Pretty Rare Weather Event Causes Damage Across Regional Parts of NSW

People in parts of regional NSW are cleaning up after a powerful tornado. The tornado started in Peel in New South Wales and travelled about 30 kilometres away. It destroyed homes, pulled up trees and powerlines, and left three people injured. Locals and emergencies services said it was pretty scary! But how exactly does a tornado start? Well, when warm, humid air meets a layer of cold, dry air, it can form a storm. Then, if winds hit the storm from different directions it can make it spin into a spiral. That’s called a vortex, and when the tip touches the ground, it becomes a tornado! You’ve probably heard of tornados mostly happening in the US and not so much in Australia, but experts say they do sometimes happen here, they’re just usually smaller and in spots where people don’t live. Now locals here are left to clean up what this tornado left behind.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL
Pack your bags Aussies, because the Prime Minister’s announced that international travel is set to get back up and running next month! It’s only for states who have reached 80% vaccination rates. Aussies who are fully vaccinated will be able to quarantine for 7 days at home when they get back, while people who are unvaccinated will still have to do 14 days in a medi-hotel. Sydney Airport’s expected to be the first to see international flights take off!

GLADYS BEREJIKLIAN STEPS DOWN
New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced she’s stepping down. She’s being investigated by the state’s corruption watchdog, known as ICAC. It’s looking into whether the premier might’ve done the wrong thing by the Australian public by giving out funding to organisations she had personal ties to. Ms Berejiklian says she’s done nothing wrong but that she has no option but to step down.

DAYLIGHT SAVING
This Sunday marks the start of daylight saving which is when a lot of Aussies will wind their clocks forward 1 hour for the summer months, but not all Aussies do it or think it’s a good idea, so why’s it a thing? Every year on the first Sunday of October, people in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT and South Australia wind their clocks forward 1 hour. As for the other states and territories well they don’t join in. Some people don’t like it because they say it messes with their sleep pattern, some farmers say it freaks out their cows because their milking time changes, some people in hot climates say they don’t really want any extra daytime, some just don’t see the point, and some probably won’t even really notice.

PEREGRINE FALCON CHICKS
High up in the air above Collins Street in Melbourne, everyone’s favourite Peregrine Falcons have had babies! These falcons have been nesting at the building since 1991 and have been live-streamed since 2017.

CHINA AIR SHOW
Jet planes are wowing spectators at Air Show China. It’s the country’s biggest Air show and shows off a bunch of different planes.

CROCODILE DRONE
An ABC camera person was filming a documentary up in Darwin when a saltwater croc decided to take a bite out of the drone.
