A History of Earth's Climate

Earth had a climate long before we showed up and started noticing it and it’s influenced by a whole series of cycles that have been churning along for hundreds of millions of years. In most cases those cycles will continue long after we’re gone. A look at the history of climate change on Earth can give us some much needed perspective on our current climate dilemma because the surprising truth is, what we’re experiencing now is different than anything this planet has encountered before. So, let’s take a stroll down Climate History Lane and see if we can find some answers to a question that’s been bugging Hank a lot lately – just how much hot water are we in?

A single plant specie took majority of CO2 out of atmosphere by sinking into the depths of icy oceans?

And what other plants ate?

What animals have ate if not those plants?

This guy is debunking all your high school biology lore in a single 11 minute long video lol.

global warming would be good
the Earth is too cold
we are currently in a major ice age
http://geology.utah.gov/map-pub/survey-notes/glad-you-asked/ice-ages-what-are-they-and-what-causes-them/
more CO₂ in the atmosphere is good
CO₂ is a nutrient, necessary for photosynthesis
6H₂O + 6CO₂ => C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

Funny how there are always more organisms alive when the planet is warm and less when it's not. It's almost like being warm is a good thing…

Paul Sarmiento August 16, 2021 at 11:00 am

They call preventing a glacial maximum where miles high glaciers covered most of Canada, Siberia, the Netherlands, UK as making a mess???
LOL. Give me a mess everyday till Sunday baby!

J man J August 16, 2021 at 5:16 pm

So we're in between ice ages, and the consensus is that we are, instead, SUPPOSED to be in a "low" temperature period? Wow. The absolute BS these people will spout in an attempt to guilt everyone into mimicking their knee-jerk reaction to temperature changes Clearly knows no bounds.

In the words of George Carlin “ The earth will be fine,it will heal itself….however humans are the ones that are f***ed”

DIVIDED AMERICA September 14, 2021 at 5:39 pm

Zero percent is caused by something other than nature. Humans are nature. If an asteroid hit, that's nature too. As for climate, it warms & cools. Sometimes quickly over a few decades. Other times over thousands of years. No one knows exactly how fast so when someone claims it's doing it faster now than in the history of the earth, well, you know, they are clueless.

No one can even give a fully accurate weather forecast out 10 days. No one has been able to stop hurricanes from hitting. Exactly how is it that people of no ability can then claim to have the ability to tell exactly what & when the weather was something six or 20 thousand years ago? The best most can do is give a good prediction out one or maybe two days from now. Where I live, they were forecasting rain & then it was snowing hard. While it was snowing, they actually said it was raining. An hour later they looked out windows of a weather station & admitted they were wrong. That was last winter.

We're making a mess? The earth is much COOLER and drier now compared to much of its historical temperatures.

Just like the Earth experienced this season based on the sun Is the Solar System experienced this season Based on the Galaxy The rapid climate change we see Is happening on every planet in the Solar System.

BORRETA, VENIZE CARYLLE A. October 3, 2021 at 1:32 pm

Do you think that the average annual global temperature and carbon dioxide levels have been consistent throughout the history of Earth?

B Smith October 5, 2021 at 8:33 am

Funny how he explains the fluctuations in the earth’s climate for millions of years due to natural effect of the sun, orbital variables, and temperature increases far greater than today’s. But then at the end blames recent warming on human activity. Also peculiar how he omits to mention the main greenhouse gas which is water vapour , about 97% in fact. Co2 does not cause warming or the climate to change , it is the gas of life . It is a nutrient and not a pollutant and all life on earth benefits from more of it

On Purpose October 16, 2021 at 11:57 pm

So I guess the sun nova every 12,000 years has NOTHING to do with this. Oh the earths magnetics, pole shifting and reversals? I do love the bedside story. Climate has never changed so so fast? Ya I guess they don’t know about the mastodon flash frozen with food still un digested in its belly.

Umm, how come the "all-knowing" US gubmint never puts a tree-planting mandate in place since they're always bitchin' about climate change destroying us all? You know…like the flu? Shoot, people could get some much-needed exercise, O2 would start to increase, and nobody would have to hoard toilet paper. Ju'sayin'. 🛸💨

Notice nearly all the first 8 minutes of "Facts" are proceeded by the word "theory". That word means we don't know but someone assumed, usually someone with a credential i.e. professors. Then it is taught to the next generation and then the next and so on, till we forget the word "theory". Next thing you know we have politicians demanding to lock up anyone who even remotely questions the theory…. I know what some of you are thinking…..Lock him up!

The earth is rejecting us because of man's interference our factories planes cars is poisoning are atmosphere the temperature is rising thefore the ocean levels will rise and flood all the coastal cities of the earth people will have to relocate inward because of the flooding , we are poisoning the oceans and soil with oil spills contaminating the oceans also elligal chemical dumping in the oceans will kill the oceans lifeforms wich could effect man's food supply the toxic gases eventually will become unbearable , will have to wear gas masks just to go outside

mike barbieri October 25, 2021 at 5:06 am

Remember nuclear meterials stored will also seep into the soil therefore contaminate the water and soil also remember 3 mile nuclear power plant accident released toxic gas into the atmosphere

mike barbieri October 25, 2021 at 5:15 am

If the temp rise to the point
Of being to high 10-15 degrees higher our food crops will fail causing famin
Starvation among the masses also mass drought
Will cause desease mass die off will occour

It has been said, but it should be said over and over, that was a major mistake, saying the asteroid was 200 km wide. Even the crater was not that big, the asteroid was 10 km wide. Apparently that error generated some interest, it seems that a rock that big would turn the earth into burning hell, uninhabitable even by all single celled life.

George Stephenson November 2, 2021 at 4:56 am

Do you really think we can afford killing fossil fuel industry completely and relaying on renewable and green energy and fuel for power and transportation
Kill money save people
We need the change immediately not after 20 or 30 years it will be humans extinct long back
Communism means living without money
Killing God is not the priority or say it's the least important
Produce everything according to needs of the people
Today we produce according to the affordability of the people
Karl Marx hated money more than God

Shane Lindie November 2, 2021 at 3:45 pm

SamytheGreek November 3, 2021 at 3:49 pm

Who ever said that climate stability was for this planet, do you see any other planet with climate stability? Climate in the last 10,000 years has been the most stable ever on Earth, we are overdue for the next ice age. Sure, we have been polluting, warming and screwing up the planet in general and we can reverse a lot of that but make no mistake, we are going into the next ice age period no matter what we do.

Brian Crowther November 4, 2021 at 9:19 am

This has some errors and omissions. The sun has gradualy heated up, it puts out 25% more energy now than when the solar system was made. CO2 and methane have been stored away by life to keep the temp roughly constant, this is via a feedback mechanism, see James Lovelock Gaia theory, Daisy World modelling. Tectonics has varied and this has varied the co2 put out. So the end of snowball earth was probably due to more co2 due to this (the breakup up of the supercontinent Rodina, the continents move in a cycle coalescing and breaking up, its to with thermal conductivity of the crust). The mass extinction 220mya was a combiination of things, the position of the super continent, Pangea, interior mostly dry desert as long way from sea. It had an ice age just prior, sth Australia, South Africa and Antartcica had ice. Sea level dropped, no continental shelf as result, extinction. Pangea breaks up, increase in volcanic activity, massive basalt sheets in India and Siberia (posibbly places like Greenland too) huge amounts of co2, temps rise by 5c, sea warms, methane at bottom of oceans move and cause further 6C rise, 11c total, mass extinction, 95% life wiped out. The boundary in the rocks is 200m below my house were I am writing this. Life gradually makes a come back to give us us via tha asteroid. CO2 and methane locked away by life in limestone and fossil fuels, keeps earth cool for life. Position of continenets helps with this.

Co2 levels getting so low plants have evloved c3 plants (grasses) instead of c4 (trees etc). The former better adapted to fire. earth only just able to be kept comfortable for life by plants sequestering co2 into limestone and fossils. At its limiyt. Lovellock reckons we have about 100 my before plants cant fight suns temp rise any more as not co2 left to put away. His book Ages Of Gaia has all this.

We are reversing this at out peril. Our civilisations evloved at a time of unsual niceness in the climate and relies on a nice climate. the loonies who think its OK to mess around with this so they get rich should be made to pull their heads in.

NIce video though overall. Thanks.

So there is a bit missing in this cast. I am a geolgist.

Johnny Latham November 5, 2021 at 6:16 am

We should be showing this at COP26

Justin Cosby November 5, 2021 at 5:37 pm

So how about this for a theory. Maybe the drastic temperature rise we see over really the last 100 years is a direct result of climate going back to exactly where it should be after coming out of the little ice age and the warming trend will now taper off. Look again at Marcotts graph. If you were to continue the warming trend the climate was experiencing before the " little ice age " the global average temperature we are experiencing today would be pretty much exactly where it is at today.
