This week on Straight Talk, three associate professors at Portland State University, Paul Loikith, Max Nielson-Pincus and Andres Holz, discuss the historic wildfires that devastated parts of Oregon, climate change’s role in the fires and what can be done moving forward. Maggie Vespa fills in for Laural Porter.

Bs this wasn't climate change propaganda
This was caused by forest mismanagement. Too much standing timber. We have more forest standing now than existed prior to the coming of Europeans. No one was there to stop the fires before. Regrowth or cutting is better than dry woods and water stolen from Oregon to feed California.
Bad story for U.S on 2020
How did I know this would be anything BUT straight talk. Still no acknowledgement of who really started the fires.
This was an anomaly. There has been longer hotter summers before. In 2015 it heated up in May and didn’t cool until October. There was a record amount of 90 plus degree days that summer. It was way dryer than this year. It was cause by the worst combination of conditions.
I agree there’s nothing straight in this talking the fires and the size of them was a result of not enough tree harvest for the last 35 years and not aggressive fire fighting for the Opal Creek fire and the warm Springs fire. Dry and warm weather in September been normal in the north west for the last 1500 years it’s nothing new.
Much more reasonable discussion than I was expecting. I live in an evacuated zone.
So you gonna suggest maybe cleaning up the fuels? Get rid of the fuels and the fire won’t burn. If your climate change religion is real that is how we can stop the fires. Science says take away one of the things fire needs to burn and it stops. Fuel would be the best way to stop a fire.
Not sure any of you guys doin this segment probably haven’t been in Oregon long. Last summer was wet and we had few to very little fires. Aww you don’t remember huh. I have also seen fire danger go clear into October in the 90s. So maybe the climate is changing and the dry events are shorter. I could go on.
Wow over 50 people caught starting fires and all of a sudden climate change is the cause. Man I was way off in my thought process. Thank you so much for all the great knowledge. I now know that Climate change, something totally out of our control to fix is a way better than blaming those pesty pest arsonists. Good job
This is conversation mis managed by media dramatics and stoked by typical, tired baseless claims. Look at the USCRN data since 2005 for the US, Alaska and Hawaii ! Atmospheric warming ?? Look at the IPCC's climate " model " failures ! Global temp data sets are stitched together gridded guesses, at best ! They completely ignore error estimates WRT their measurements ! KGW fills dead air with dufus spoken pablum !
Yet its back to rain.. You fog king wah wahs pushing the narrative to deflect away from BLMANTIFA that started over 50 fires
Worthless lies…they claim climate change and have the balls to say old growth is more fire resistant. Funny how they didn’t mention how refusing to log the forests and poor forest management leads to even more dead underbrush which is what fuels these huge fires. Anything to promote their left wing agenda without actually bringing the facts and without asking the questions that would counter their agenda. Typical media and typical KGW.
They are pushing a Climate Crisis Lie, for World Power, by the Communist. The climate is fine. The fires were all set by the people currently attacking our Country. There is no Climate Crisis. It is a lie.

Dead pines.. Tinder dry. Antifa lighting them. Climate change my ass. Bark beetles have killed milions of acres.
Climate change is a myth. Antifa are setting the fires
Maggie Vespar is going to go national very soon. The climate is a slope, except where it's a cliff – i.e.tipping points!
The biggest deception? CLIMATE CHANGE. But then again, it's Oregon we just expect lies anyway. Poor forest management is the reason for fires and just plain lazy people in charge like your Governor.
